YEARS of planning, fundraising and persistence have culminated in the official opening of Maleny Golf Club’s new $1.7 million clubhouse.
More than 60 members, supporters and guests attended the opening ceremony, including Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston, former deputy mayor Don Smith and a host of people who helped build the club from its earliest days.
The project received the green light in November last year, clearing the way for construction of the seven-module clubhouse.
General manager Doug Evans said the facility would not have been possible without the backing of members and the wider community.

“More than $850,000 came from our generous members and supporters,” he said.
“We think we’re very, very fortunate to have such a great, great group of members and supporters.”
Mr Evans added the clubhouse had always been intended to serve more than just golfers.
“We see this as a shared community space,” he said.
“We’ve already had more than a dozen events and functions here, from Dark Sky events to Maleny Commerce functions to major golf events, and the idea is that people don’t have to come here just to play golf.”
“We want it to be a place where people can come, sit down, have a coffee or something to eat and enjoy the view,” Mr Evans said.

“We’re really happy to be able to provide that for the community, and we see that role growing, particularly through pathways for juniors and women.”
The ceremony also recognised some of those who have played important roles in the club’s development, including number one member Rod Thamm and Ladies Coordinator Narelle Thamm.
Former shop manager Mike Finley was also acknowledged for his contribution.
The ceremony concluded with a symbolic tee-off down the 18th fairway involving Mr Evans, Mr Finley.
