Accessibility concerns raised over new dog park

THE newly opened Maleny Precinct Dog Off-Leash Park has sparked concerns over disability access, with some residents questioning whether the distance from parking to the facility is suitable for people with mobility challenges.

The park officially opened on May 11 and includes new fencing, footpaths, seating and landscaping.

However, Sunshine Coast Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said council had received feedback from some residents concerned the short walk from available parking to the entrance could be difficult for some people with disabilities.

“At present there is disability access to it, but not for people who want to be able to park their car and get into the park in a short distance,” Cr Johnston said.

He said only a small number of concerns had been formally raised, but council was taking the matter seriously and reviewing options to improve accessibility, including the possibility of parking closer to the site.

In the meantime, residents with higher access needs are being encouraged to continue using the existing off-leash dog area at the Maleny Showgrounds.

The new park also incorporates environmental protections, including the retention and fencing of a council laurel tree identified as toxic to dogs but an important habitat for rainbow honeyeaters.

Cr Johnston said council would continue refining the facility to ensure it was accessible and comfortable for all users.
