HQ Plantations’ Beerburrum forestry is expected to reopen this fortnight after flooding caused serious road damage.
But HQ’s communications manager Stephanie Hunt said their next concern were impending wildfires.
The 33,0000-hectare Beerburrum plantation accounts for the majority of up to 300 fires that occur across the company’s 315,000 hectares of forestry every year.
Steph told a recent Glasshouse Country Disaster Management Network meeting that about half of the fires started in Beerburrum each year were cause by people torching vehicles. This was partly because of the plantations close proximity to urban areas.
A prescribed burn program is also set to commence at Beerburrum soon with details to be released in early April.
