Aura South gets federal green light

A MAJOR new housing expansion on the Sunshine Coast has cleared a key hurdle after Stockland’s proposed Aura South community received federal environmental approval, paving the way for up to 12,000 new homes.

The Commonwealth Government approved the project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 following extensive environmental studies and community consultation.

Stockland General Manager David Laner said the approval balanced environmental protection with the region’s urgent housing needs. “We welcome the approval, which follows substantial environmental studies and conversations with the community that have helped shape Aura South,” Mr Laner said.

More than half of the site will be preserved as green space, while the project is expected to generate almost 23,000 jobs and contribute an estimated $3.4 billion to the economy.

Mr Laner said Aura South’s location beside the existing Aura community would support major State Government transport investments, including The Wave heavy rail project and regional road upgrades.
