DISCUSSIONS are on the table regarding the possible reinstatement of the Australia Day Awards by the Sunshine Coast Council.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli confirmed that the matter remains a priority.
“Council is considering the issue and it remains a priority for us,” she told GC&M News.
“We will keep our community informed.”
In 2023, the Council faced a backlash for quietly scrapping the traditional Australia Day Awards and renaming them the Sunshine Coast Biosphere – Community Awards.
The rebranding, which was done without public consultation, was met with criticism from community leaders and residents, who argued the decision should have been made in consultation with the public.
Mayor Natoli promised to reconsider the decision during last year’s council election.
