Australia leads way in ‘Mind Medicine’

Australia has taken a global lead in the clinical use of psychedelic-assisted therapies, offering new hope for people living with treatment-resistant mental illnesses.

Mind Medicine Australia (MMA), the nation’s leading not-for-profit in this space, has been instrumental in making these transformative treatments accessible, thanks to ground-breaking policy reform and clinical innovation.

Drawing on positive global clinical trial results, MMA advocated for the legal rescheduling of psilocybin and MDMA for use in therapy, achieving a historic breakthrough. As a result, Australian psychiatrists can now prescribe these medicines in controlled clinical environments for patients with treatment-resistant depression and PTSD.

Since then, progress has been rapid. Over 500 clinicians have completed MMA’s Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies, and partnerships with palliative care organisations are expanding access to patients facing end-of-life anxiety.

MMA’s work extends beyond therapy delivery. The organisation is funding research into additional conditions such as OCD and eating disorders, building a world-first Real World Evidence Registry with the Australian National University, and developing clinic management software to improve patient experience.

Executive Director Tania de Jong AM said: “We are so delighted to see Australia leading the way in this rapidly emerging field. These transformational treatments are game-changers for so many.”
