Back to school for nearly 890,000 Queensland students

The 2025 school year is officially underway, with close to 890,000 Queensland students returning to classrooms across the state.

The return marks a major milestone for students, teachers, and families as morning routines resume and school zones come back into effect. More than 56,000 teachers and approximately 19,000 teacher aides are welcoming students into classrooms this year.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said it was an exciting day for Queensland families.

“For many children, today is a fresh start—whether they’re beginning school for the first time or returning to familiar faces and routines,” he said. “We’re working to ensure all students receive a world-class education, and that teachers have the time and support they need to focus on what matters most—teaching.”

The Queensland Government has pledged to cut teacher red tape by 25 per cent, giving educators more time in the classroom and less on paperwork.

While the spotlight remains on the state-wide return to learning, two new schools also opened their gates this week—Corymbia State School in Park Ridge and Collingwood Park State Secondary College near Redbank Plains—catering to demand in high-growth regions.

Queensland’s school year runs through to 12 December, with four terms of 10 weeks.
