BEERWAH State High School student Joe Wilson has enjoyed an extraordinary few weeks, cementing his place as one of Queensland’s most exciting young middle-distance and cross-country athletes.
Joe recently finished runner-up at the Queensland State Cross Country Championships on the Gold Coast. He then backed it up with a superb performance to win the Queensland School Sport State Cross Country Championship in Toowoomba, earning the title of U/15 State Champion.
Star Squad Running Head Coach Bruce Smith said Joe’s achievements were well deserved. “Joe has worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months and continues to improve every time he races,” he said.
“To finish second at the Queensland State Championships and then come back the following weekend to win the Queensland School Sport State Championship is a fantastic achievement. We couldn’t be prouder of him.”
Coach Smith said Joe’s success also reflected the strength of the Star Squad Running program and the culture the athletes have built together.
“Running can sometimes look like an individual sport, but our athletes train together and push each other every week,” he said.
“Joe has benefited enormously from training alongside athletes like Xavier Cracknell and Asher Jones, who continually challenge each other to improve. Their support and friendly rivalry have played a big part in Joe’s development.”
The past few weeks have also highlighted the depth of local talent within Star Squad Running. Several squad members qualified to compete at the Queensland State Cross Country Championships, with Xavier Cracknell, Joe Wilson, Asher Jones and Skylah Fox all proudly representing the Sunshine Coast against the state’s best young distance runners.
Adding to the club’s recent success, Asher Jones won the State Cross Country time trial in Toowoomba, once again demonstrating that consistency and hard work produce results.
The squad’s success will continue next month, with Joe Wilson and Xavier Cracknell both selected to represent Queensland at the Australian Cross Country Championships next month in Ballarat, Victoria.
Xavier’s selection is particularly remarkable, having qualified for the Queensland team after less than a year of training.
Coach Smith said seeing local athletes achieve success at the highest level was incredibly rewarding.
“As a coach, I’m extremely proud of Joe and all of our athletes. Whether they’re winning state titles, qualifying for championships, or achieving personal bests, each one has earned their success through dedication and perseverance,” he said. ‘We have an outstanding group of young athletes at Star Squad Running, and I believe the future is very bright for all of them.”
With Joe now a Queensland School Sport Under-15 State Champion and both he and Xavier preparing to wear the maroon at the national championships, Star Squad Running is continuing to demonstrate that local athletes are producing some of Australia’s most promising young distance-running talent.
