Brisbane drivers slugged at the bowser for third straight year

RACQ’s Annual Fuel Price Report shows Brisbane motorists again paid more for unleaded fuel than drivers in any other Australian capital in 2025, marking the third straight year the city has topped the price list.

Brisbane’s average regular unleaded price reached 185.2 cents per litre, just above Canberra and about 11 cents higher than Adelaide.

Diesel prices also remained elevated, averaging 189.6 cents per litre — the second highest of all capitals — although this was an improvement on Brisbane’s 2024 average.

The report links Brisbane’s higher prices to limited competition, fewer independent service stations, and a price cycle dominated by major retailers that produces sharp rises and uneven discounting periods.

Despite the ranking, average unleaded prices were lower than last year, dropping 9.3 cents per litre from 2024’s record highs.

Price differences across Brisbane were substantial.

The gap between the cheapest and most expensive suburbs approached 40 cents per litre, with Kuraby the lowest and Clayfield the highest.

Differences between individual service stations were even greater.

Ongoing volatility has prompted renewed calls for fuel market regulation, with the Queensland Government considering reform proposals.

RACQ is urging motorists to compare prices and use fuel-price tools to reduce costs.
