Building local resilience

BUILDING Maleny’s resilience and readiness for future emergencies was the focus of a recent workshop aimed at strengthening community response capability ahead of potential disasters.

On May 6, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre hosted a Resilience Readiness Scorecard workshop, bringing together local community organisations, including Maleny Lions and the Men’s Shed, alongside representatives from Sunshine Coast Council and the SES.

Initiated by Get Ready Maleny, the session used a framework developed by Neighbourhood Centres Queensland to assess organisational preparedness across three key areas: change readiness, leadership and culture, and networks and collaboration.

Facilitated by Natasha Odgers of Natural Connections Consulting, the workshop encouraged participants to consider whether their organisations have effective emergency plans, who would implement them, and what resources could be accessed in a crisis.

A key theme was the reliance on strong volunteer leadership in emergencies and the importance of understanding each organisation’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to both immediate response and longer-term community recovery.

Organisers said the exercise reinforced that while government agencies lead initial disaster response, resilient communities are vital in managing the longer-term impacts of severe weather events.
