A NEW report has quantified for the first time the major economic, social and cultural contribution Australia’s community radio music stations make in discovering and supporting grassroots talent.
The report, Community Radio and Australian Music: Building the Music Media Ecosystem, found community radio stations generate an estimated $153 million in annual added value to the music industry and broadcast more than double the amount of Australian music played on commercial networks.

Professor Shane Homan, from Monash University’s School of Media, Film and Journalism, said the findings highlighted the sector’s importance at a time when streaming algorithms were making it harder for Australian artists to gain exposure.
“Community radio is vital infrastructure supporting the broader Australian music industry,” he said.
