More than 24,000 social housing properties across Queensland will benefit from ceiling fans as part of a $98 million investment aimed at improving energy efficiency and tenant wellbeing.
The ceiling fans, which will be installed in bedrooms and living areas, are part of a four-year programme to enhance living conditions for social housing tenants. Additionally, up to 32,000 social homes will receive energy-efficient upgrades, including ceiling insulation, solar photovoltaic systems, and cooling systems in the state’s hottest regions.
This initiative is supported through the Australian Government’s Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative, with a total of $116 million allocated to the project. Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson MP, highlighted the immediate impact of the programme, reducing energy costs and improving the liveability of homes.
Minister for Housing and Public Works, Sam O’Connor, stressed the importance of the upgrades, noting that Queensland’s extreme summers can significantly affect the health of vulnerable tenants, including the elderly, young children, and those with medical conditions.
“The Crisafulli Government is committed to improving the comfort and sustainability of social housing properties,” Mr O’Connor said. “These upgrades will make a real difference to the lives of Queenslanders in need.”
