Queensland will invest more than $10 million in waste management initiatives, including tackling litter and illegal dumping, as part of efforts to protect the state’s environment.
Environment Minister Leanne Linard announced $2.7 million in funding for 30 local councils to address illegal dumping. The funding extends the Local Government Illegal Dumping Partnerships Program, which has provided more than $11 million in grants since 2020. The program enables councils to employ compliance officers to identify offenders and implement preventative measures.
A further $7 million will be allocated to regional waste management plan coordinators. These roles will support local councils in executing waste management strategies designed to improve recycling, reduce landfill, and create economic opportunities.
Linard also announced applications had opened for grants aimed at addressing litter and marine debris. Up to $750,000 will be available for eligible community groups and individuals to undertake clean-up projects. Grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded for initiatives targeting beaches, waterways, parks, and reserves.
The Local Government Association of Queensland welcomed the funding, with chief executive Alison Smith describing it as a “positive step” in assisting councils with waste management and the fight against illegal dumping.
