Professor Hugh White in ‘hard’ conversation at Maleny
Australia is facing its most dangerous strategic crisis in generations, according to Professor Hugh White AO (pictured), who will appear in Maleny on Thursday, June 19 to discuss his new Quarterly Essay, ‘Hard New World, Our post-American Future.’
Presented by Outspoken, the event will be held at the Maleny Community Centre from 6pm for 6.30pm and will also feature best-selling author Joanna Jenkins, introducing her latest crime novel, The Bluff.
In his essay, White explores the collapse of the global order and the rise of conflict in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. He argues that America’s retreat from coherent leadership—particularly under Donald Trump—has left a dangerous vacuum.
Professor White, who served as Deputy Secretary for Strategy in the Department of Defence and was founding Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, warns of stark choices ahead for Australia. He is now Emeritus Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University in Canberra and is widely regarded as Australia’s preeminent commentator on matters of defence.
In his recent publications (Sleepwalk to War: Australia’s Unthinking Alliance with America, and his book, How to Defend Australia) he questions our alliance with the US, particularly through AUKUS, and urges a more clear-eyed appraisal of our place in a rapidly changing world.
Ms Jenkins, author of the hit debut How To Kill A Client, will open the evening with a talk about her sharply observed new novel.
