Diversity celebrated during Harmony Week

OUR region’s diversity will be on display this week as the Sunshine Coast celebrates Harmony Week.
In the lead up to Harmony Day on March 21, which is observed as the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, there are a number of events happening celebrating this year’s theme ‘Everyone Belongs’.
Saturday March 19 will see two Harmony Week events held locally at Beerburrum Hall and Maple Street, Maleny.
Beerburrum School of Arts will host a Multicultural Arts Showcase from 9am-1pm featuring an exhibition of African art and artefacts, as well as local artwork and demonstrations and activities.
‘Maleny Welcome and Belonging Flags’ on ‘The Green’ at Maple Street invites visitors to come along from 9am-12.30pm and write or draw messages of meaning on community flags. Both events are free.
On Monday, March 21, Beerwah QCWA will host a native foods morning tea a little further up the road at My Dilly Bag, Forest Glen, with guest speaker Stella Romagnoli, originally from Uruguay, speaking about creating welcoming communities.
The Harmony Week program will feature important conversations and reflections, along with the colourful array of food, dance, sport, culture and workshops, which highlight the kaleidoscope of faith, linguistic and ethnic diversity of the region.
Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said Harmony Week continued to be a highlight of the yearly calendar.
“This year’s theme is ‘Everyone Belongs,’ which is a wonderful fit for our region,” Cr Law said.
“I trust this year’s events will be a great success, and I encourage everyone to don their favourite orange outfits and enjoy the many great activities and experiences on offer across the region.
“Harmony Week continues to be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Sunshine Coast’s understanding, respect and compassion for our multicultural and multi-faith communities.”
