Emergency declaration ensures food supply

An unprecedented emergency planning declaration has been signed off by Queensland Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie to ensure essential supplies such as food and medicines continue to reach stores as the state braces for Cyclone Alfred.

The emergency declaration, which takes effect from 12:01am on Wednesday, 5 March, will allow shops, warehouses, and transport depots in 21 local government areas, including the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and Somerset, to operate around the clock.

Mr Bleijie, who is also the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, said the decision was necessary to keep the supply chain moving as Queenslanders prepare for the cyclone’s impact.

“This is a rare event and marks the first time an emergency declaration has been issued before a natural disaster has hit Queensland,” he said.

“The emergency declaration will enable these businesses to restock 24/7. This includes supermarkets, chemists, healthcare services, warehouses, transport depots and hardware supply businesses.”

The declaration, which will remain in place until 19 March unless extended or revoked earlier, is aimed at preventing shortages as residents stock up on essential items ahead of the cyclone’s arrival. Supermarkets have reported increased demand, with shelves emptying quickly in some areas as residents rush to prepare.

“Our primary goal is to supercharge the food and essential supply chains that are set to be affected by Cyclone Alfred,” Mr Bleijie said. “By temporarily lifting restrictions, we can ensure more products hit the shelves faster, allowing supermarkets to meet demand.”

With Queensland already experiencing severe weather conditions in recent months, local councils have been briefed on the changes.

The declaration also enables businesses to apply for a Temporary Use Licence, allowing them to adapt operations in response to the emergency. These licences offer flexibility for businesses needing to adjust logistics or trading hours during the crisis.
