Families get savvy for 2023 school year

THE BIG W annual Back to School Report has found families are aiming to spend smarter this school year due to cost-of-living pressures.

The report found parents are looking to buy more combo and bulk packs for back-to-school items with one in five parents will have a child starting primary school in 2023.

Financial educator and money expert Vanessa Stoykov said shopping deals this year will be an important way for families to save money when it comes to school supplies.

“After the holiday season and with more families feeling financial pressure heading into 2023, my advice is to plan ahead, shop online and shop early to make sure you’re getting the best deals,” she said.

“With a clear plan, you can invest in quality items that will last the year ahead, while also saving money on supplies we all know kids will inevitably lose, break or wear out!”

The report also found 40 million school items would be replaced this year, through wear and tear, losing items, or outgrowing items.

According to surveyed parents with children aged 5-17 years old in the Back to School report, 83% of school students most commonly need their school shoes replaced every year.

This was closely followed by school uniform items needing to be replaced for 80% of students, and sport school shoes needing to be replaced for 74% of students.
