Flu cases could surge this season

THE number of reported influenza cases in Australia is expected to surge, with health authorities warning the 2026 season is tracking in line with a sharp five-year trend.

The Australian Respiratory Surveillance Report shows cases recorded in the 18th week of the year (beginning April 27) have increased ten-fold, rising from thousands to tens of thousands nationally, signalling the likely start of peak transmission.

Doctors are urging Australians to take preventive action, warning influenza is far more serious than the common cold and can lead to hospitalisation or death among vulnerable groups.

More than 5,900 cases have already been recorded in people over 65 this year, accounting for more than 20 per cent of all notifications, though she says actual infections are likely higher due to underreporting.

Vaccination uptake among Australians over 65 has fallen, with only one in five receiving the flu vaccine this year, down on last year.

Modelling suggesting cases may double within four weeks and potentially quadruple by late June if trends continue, highlighting the need for vaccination and prevention options.
