Community always comes first for Nita

A HUMBLED Nita Lester was awarded the Zonta Club of Blackall Range Woman of Achievement for 2022 at the Maleny Community Centre last week.

Zonta Club’s Ann Koenig revealed Nita as the winner at the International Women’s Day event, saying Nita was a tireless and enthusiastic volunteer across a range of community projects.

Nita is president of the Mapleton Community Library where she runs classes on classical art and botany, including classes for young children, and is also director of the Blackall Range Care Group.

“She is a botanist, artist, designer, publisher and volunteer. What a woman. Congratulations Nita,” Ann said.

“Nita works enthusiastically in the community. I was told that if there’s anything going on in Mapleton, Nita will be involved.”

Nita was quick to say the award belonged to all volunteers in the community.

“The only words I can say is to reverse everything you said and put volunteer first,” Nita said.

“Community to me, and I’m quite sure to absolutely everyone here today, community is number one.

“Congratulations to all of you because that’s where the congratulations belong.”
