Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club recently visited Brisbane City Hall on an outing—and they’re still talking about it.
The highlight of the day was the graffiti wall, rediscovered during recent renovations and now proudly on display. The wall was once part of the male toilet, and the writings are signatures and comments left by young soldiers on their way to the battlefront in the Great War of 1914–1918. At the time, the basement served as a canteen providing refreshments.
Fortunately, the graffiti was done in pencil, so it has survived the decades. The words of these young men, written over a century ago, deeply moved club members.
The guest speaker for May introduced Kindness Counts, a volunteer organisation providing non-professional help—such as social support, shopping assistance, or help filling in forms—to older people living alone.
Probus is a club for active retirees who simply enjoy getting together. It was originally set up by Rotary for older members to continue enjoying fellowship at a more relaxed pace. Probus is not a fundraising club, but it remains true to its motto: Fun, Friendship, Fellowship.
