Grants to prevent social isolation among seniors available

Applications are open for organisations across Queensland to apply for a share of $2.5 million annually from 2024–2029. The funding aims to support initiatives that combat social isolation among older Queenslanders, helping them stay connected, active, and supported within their communities.

Organisations of all sizes, including not-for-profits, are encouraged to apply. Funding is also available for a peak body organisation to coordinate the Seniors Social Isolation Program and offer advice to the government. Applications are particularly sought from regional and rural communities, where services are often limited, and from community-controlled organisations supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander older peoples.

With Queensland’s ageing population, particularly in rural areas, addressing social isolation is critical. Isolation negatively impacts older people’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being, and services that foster connection can improve quality of life and health outcomes.

This funding complements an existing $20.5 million investment over five years, which currently supports 42 providers of Seniors Social Isolation Services in 25 local government areas.

Key Details:

  • $2.25 million annually for Seniors Social Isolation Services from 2024–2029 (applications open 23 February to 22 March 2024).
  • $250,000 annually for a peak body to lead and advise the program (applications open 23 February to 15 March 2024).
  • The program serves seniors aged 60+ and First Nations peoples aged 50+ at risk of social isolation.

Minister for Seniors Charis Mullen highlighted the importance of supporting smaller, volunteer-driven organisations, which are crucial to combating social isolation and promoting the well-being of older Queenslanders.
