High demand for sand bags in Beerwah

By Kirra Livingstone

THE Glasshouse Mountains SES opened this morning to give out sand bags to residents as they prepare for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, and have already run out of sand, as the community braces for the adverse weather event.

Acting deputy group leader, Christian Coventry, said they had 5m² of sand when they opened at 7am on Tuesday, March 4, and are now waiting for more sand to be delivered.

“We’ve requested more but we don’t know when it’ll be delivered, we did have to stock up our own sand bags as well,” he said.

“The community should follow the warnings that are given by BOM, keep the radio tuned, and follow all of the official advice.

“If people need help from the SES, give us a call on 132 500, it will reach one of our call centres, they’ll ask you some questions and we will come out to you as soon as we can.”

Mr Coventry added that if people are interested in volunteering for the local SES, go onto the SES website which will have details on how to become a volunteer.

The sand bag pick up station is located at 22 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah and will be open until 8pm tonight.
