MALENY artist David Bongiorno has won one of the top accolades at this year’s Brisbane Portrait Prize, receiving the $7,500 Performing Arts and Music Industry Prize for his portrait ‘Built This Way’.
The work depicts musician Karl S. Williams and was praised by Chief Judge Jason Smith as “technically and aesthetically refined and confidently understated.” He said the portrait carried “a potent allure” and reflected the evolving discipline of painting while drawing on tradition.
Bongiorno’s award-winning piece is featured in the Brisbane Portrait Prize Finalists Exhibition, on display at the SLQ Gallery, State Library of Queensland, until November 9.
