THE Sunshine Coast hinterland will benefit from a major koala habitat restoration program after Hinterland Bush Links secured State Government funding to plant 4,000 native trees and strengthen wildlife corridors across the region.
The project is one of 11 across south-east Queensland to share almost $600,000 through the Queensland Government’s Grassroots Environmental Grants program, with more than 27,000 koala food and habitat trees to be planted.
The funding will support on-ground works including tree planting, weed removal and habitat restoration to reconnect fragmented bushland in key koala areas.
Environment Minister Andrew Powell said the investment would help secure the future of one of Queensland’s most recognisable native animals.
“Queenslanders love koalas and we’re taking practical action to protect them,” Mr Powell said.
Hinterland Bush Links will focus on improving habitat connectivity across the Sunshine Coast hinterland, while another funded project by Ecollaboration Ltd will plant 1,200 koala food and habitat trees in Upper Caboolture to further strengthen regional wildlife corridors.
