One day a chicken visits the library. It lifts up its wing and says, “book-book.”
The librarian thinks “wow! That is one intelligent chicken!’’
So she gives the chicken a pamphlet. The chicken closes its wing over the pamphlet and heads out the door.
But the chicken comes back 15 minutes later. “Book-book,” it says again.
This time the librarian hands it a paperback. The chicken puts its wing over the paperback and heads out the door.
The chicken returns 15 minutes later and drops the paperback on the librarian’s desk. “Book-book,” says the chicken.
“There’s no way this chicken could have read it this quickly,” thinks the librarian, so this time she gives the chicken a big fat reference book. The chicken struggles to grasp the large book, and then stumbles out the door.
The librarian smiles secretly to herself, then shuts the library’s door and flips the closed sign over.
She follows the chicken down the main street and across the village green until they come to a bridge with a stream running underneath.
The librarian waits for the chicken to cross the bridge, but the chicken doesn’t cross the bridge.
Instead, the chicken goes under the bridge. Under the bridge is a frog sitting on a lily pad.
The chicken pushes the book to the frog. The frog stares at the chicken and then croaks, “read it, read it.”
