Getting home from a night out in the Sunshine Coast’s bustling late-night precincts is set to become safer and more convenient, thanks to the launch of a new late-night bus service trial beginning tonight (Friday July 18).
The 12-month trial includes extended services on routes 616 and 600, with an extra 10 trips added to route 616 after 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Both routes will now stop just 180 metres from Ocean Street and the Maroochydore Safe Night Precinct (SNP), offering closer and more frequent access for night-time travellers.
The initiative aims to address growing transport demand in popular night precincts including Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Buderim, Sippy Downs (UniSC) and Palmview.
The trial complements Translink’s support of the Queensland Government’s Safe Night Out Strategy. Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said it aligns with broader efforts to enhance safety and affordability.
“With the LNP Government’s permanent 50 cent fares, public transport is a cheap and convenient option on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Mickelberg said. “These late-night improvements will help more people get home from our nightlife precincts and support hospitality workers travelling late or early.”
Demand for rideshare and taxi services often outstrips supply, and the trial is expected to help bridge the gap by offering reliable, fixed-route alternatives. It’s also seen as a boost for local venues and workers.
Safe Night Precinct President Scott Hoskins said the trial could have wide-reaching benefits.
“Everyone stands to benefit from a successful trial-local businesses will see more inbound customers, and locals can safely travel between precincts like Mooloolaba and Caloundra,” Mr Hoskins said.
Route 600 currently operates 11 late-night trips between 10pm and 4am on weekends. Under the trial, route 616 will also run late on Fridays and Saturdays between Maroochydore and Mooloolaba, continuing through UniSC and into fast-growing Palmview.
