Libraries’ celebrity spotlight welcomes writer Sarah Williams

By the Maleny Library staff

Sarah Williams is a bestselling, award-winning author and a member of Sunshine Coast Libraries. Sarah is a frequent visitor to Maleny Library where she regularly runs the Writing Friday sessions for the Queensland Writers’ Centre. Writing Friday is a volunteer program that connects writers in their local community.

Libraries caught up with Sarah recently, to find out what she thinks about Maleny Library.

“I love visiting my local library. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and always happy to help,” said Ms Williams.

As well as mentoring writers, Sarah visits the library because she loves borrowing books and magazines for herself and her children. As a busy mother of four, she does a lot of borrowing!

“A love of reading should be encouraged from a young age and my children love exploring the rows and rows of books and each getting to choose one to borrow,” said Ms Williams.

Sarah grew up using libraries and said that through books she enjoyed escaping the everyday and journeying to places like Narnia, Green Gables and Hogwarts.

“I was never alone when I had a book and now that I am a fiction-writer I love being able to share the places and people that live in my imagination”.

Her imagination is busy as she has numerous publications, including the series Heart of the Hinterland, where locals may recognise familiar locations and fellow Hinterland characters.
