The Range Croquet Club

We have had an interesting couple of weeks, with many results from various competitions coming through.

Firstly, the results from the Association Croquet Pennants competitions have been finalised and we’re proud to announce that our Bray team came second and Lochwood team came in third. As a small club, this is a tremendous effort. Many thanks to the team captains for their hard work and to the coaches for getting us ready to play. With croquet, there’s always more to learn and strategies to think through in a new way!

Our club championships have finished and results finalised. The Division 2 Association Croquet Champion this year is Donna Manning, with Sarah Widin being the runner-up. The attached photo shows Donna being presented with the Division 2 shield by our club president Sarah, watched on (from left to right) by Ken Barker, Nick Cram, Vince Carbery and Val Carbery. Everyone gave their best and enjoyed the friendly and lively competition.

The Division 3 Association Croquet competition was won by Dianne Horsman, with Lynette Evans the runner up. The match between Dianne and Lynette was a very exciting, close one with Dianne narrowly winning by just one hoop. This started a trend with the Division 4 championship finishing in a similar manner with a close run competition between Wallace Roy and Helen Uhlmann. Wallace managed to sneak ahead towards the end to win by one hoop after very even play. A hearty congratulations to both Dianne and Wallace on their achievements.

The combination of the busyness of our championship play and the unfriendly weather has taken its toll on our usual play and coaching days. After several days of rain we have welcomed the return of the sun, thankfully defying the Bureau of Meteorology which had bleakly forecast steady rain during this past week. Despite this, with the rest of Maleny, we have shivered with the blustery, cold weather and for some players, participation has been hampered by this.

For our Thursday afternoon session on the 7th of July, four brave souls turned up to play and took part in singles matches. Sally Adams played against Kath Smith while Helen Andrews played Lynette Evans. They were friendly, relaxed games and scores were not recorded. It’s great to have the opportunity to play informally in this way, trying out variations in strategy and practicing skills.

Sunday afternoon the 10th was also a cold one and six intrepid players arrived ready to play. In a singles game, Nick Cram successfully took on Vince Carbery to win 17-11. At the same time, a doubles match took place in which Donna Manning and Lynette Evans challenged Val Carbery and Helen Andrews, coming up victorious with 11 hoops to Val and Helen’s 5.

We’ll see what turn the weather takes in the coming weeks and keep our fingers crossed that things warm up a bit!

Play days are Thursday and Sunday 1pm for 1:30pm start. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Coaching is available on Saturday mornings at 8am

The Wikings hosted Nambas in the latest vets battle. With a mixed team of ladies playing as men and fill-ins from other teams, we stood our ground and did not hold back. Out gunned throughout, it still went down to the wire, with Nambas victorious on the day. You know it is a fantastic day of tennis when everyone is in great spirits after ‘narrowly’ losing and can’t wait to get back out on the courts. Huge thanks to everyone who played.
