A HINTERLAND bowls club has made an impressive reentry into the men’s Sunshine Coast pennants division 10 competition by winning the flag.
The Maleny Bowls Club hasn’t been in the local competition for at least 10 years, however entered a team this year and received their flag on December 9.
Maleny Bowls treasurer, Brett Gillis, said it was a great season with tough opposition, and are pleased with their result.
“The first game of the season we played at home and we beat Palmwoods, which I think surprised everyone,” he said.
“We then played Mooloolaba and Pelican Waters and both clubs smashed us, however we had a chance to play all three clubs again, in which we beat them all.
“We beat Pelican Waters to get into the semi finals, and then had to play them again the next day which we did, and then played Mooloolaba to win the flag.”
Brett said it was very unexpected for Maleny to win the flag in their first year back, and is pleased the club’s men’s team will be playing in division nine next year.
“I think everyone was surprised that we had won the flag after our absence from pennants, but we were all pleased to have achieved this in our first year back,” he said.
The community bowls club is now considering entering a women’s pennant team next year.
“After having lawn bowlers from team’s across the highway, we have attracted three or four new club members who are keen to play in the men’s pennants team next year,” he said.
“After winning the flag this year, our female lawn bowlers also want in and want to submit a team next year, because they haven’t played in the competition for many moons.”
