AFTER a four year hiatus (thanks to Covid), the biennial Maleny Quilt Show is returning this weekend. Run by the Maleny Arts & Crafts Group, hundreds of hours of busy hand and machine work, showcasing centuries-old techniques, modern adaptations, with every colour of the rainbow will be on display at the two day event.
This year’s co-ordinator and Montville business owner Tracey Malkin is thrilled the event is going ahead after a lengthy break. The event has been held every two years since 2010 (excluding 2020) and understandably MACG Quilters are thrilled to be showcasing their beautiful work to the public.
“There’ll be a range of quilts on display ranging from cot size to king, modern to traditional styles and everything in between,” said Tracey. “There are probably hundreds of accumulated hours that go into creating quilts for the event.”
Throughout the year MACG spend time making many beautiful quilts with Tracey sharing some are made for special events and competitions, and also for display – some are even made to be used! Members also make charity quilts, with many donated to local hospice and to the group’s chosen charity Downs & West Drought Relief Program.
“Leading up to the show, members are tasked with a ‘challenge’ quilt and this year it’s a ‘recycling challenge quilt’,” said Tracey. “Members have really taken the idea and run with it!”
Along with a range of beautiful quilts on display, there’ll be a trader’s alley, sales of handmade items, coffee and tea facilities, cakes, slices and sandwiches, and of course a fantastic raffle.
Raffle ticket holders will have a chance to win a quilt made by members of MACG and quilted by Leonie Giddons; a sewing machine, donated by Kimz Sewing and Patchwork Centre; and a Lap Quilt Kit. Raffle tickets are just $2 and can be purchased prior to the event at the MACG gallery in Maleny and Maleny Magic Patchwork and Quilts, or at the event.
Maleny Quilt Show runs from 9am-3pm, Septmber 24 –25 at Maleny Show Grounds Main Pavilion. Entry is $5 and include a cup of tea or coffee. All are welcome!
