MALENY will turn its attention to inclusion and visibility this May as local businesses, community groups and the library join a month-long “Flying the Flag” program recognising IDAHOBIT the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia alongside Pride.
Residents are being invited to take part in six community events aimed at strengthening respect and social cohesion in the town.
Organisers say the initiative reflects Maleny’s identity as a “much loved and loving community”, built on connection and mutual support.
On IDAHOBIT Day, Sunday May 17, organisers will be stationed at the Maple Street kiosk, offering on-street colour, conversation and opportunities for community connection.
A spokesperson for the event said the program is designed to encourage visibility and understanding across all parts of the community, with local organisations contributing displays and hosting events throughout the month.
“This is about building respect, celebrating diversity and ensuring everyone feels they belong,” they said.
Community members can attend any of the scheduled events or follow the full program via the group’s Facebook page.
Organisers can also be contacted at malenyidahobit@gmail.com for further information.
More details about IDAHOBIT and its significance in Australia are available through the national campaign website.
