Barung Landcare has announced the shock cancellation of the 2025 Maleny Wood Expo, citing mounting financial pressures and logistical challenges.
The decision, made by the Barung Landcare Management Committee, marks a significant pause for the iconic Sunshine Coast event, which has celebrated local craftsmanship and environmental values for over 25 years.
Rising supplier costs, unpredictable weather, tighter contractual agreements, and a decline in sponsorship and investment have been named as key factors behind the cancellation. Barung Landcare said the financial risks of proceeding were simply too high.
“Unfortunately, due to our organisation facing ongoing financial challenges, the financial risk to the organisation is now far too great to proceed with a 2025 event,” a Barung spokesperson said.
“We understand the disappointment this news will bring to our community,” the spokesperson said. “This decision has not been made lightly, and we remain committed to exploring ways to support our community and sustain the spirit of the Expo.”
The cancellation also impacts the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize, which will not accept entries for 2025. While no decision has been made about the event’s future, Barung Landcare remains open to exploring possibilities for its return.
“We sincerely apologise for the impact this decision may have on you all,” the spokesperson said. “We ask that you offer compassion and kindness to our frontline staff and contractors who deliver the Expo, as the entire team is deeply feeling this decision at the moment.”
The organisation acknowledged the ongoing support of the Sunshine Coast Council and other long-standing contributors, expressing gratitude for their involvement over the years.
“At this time, there are no decisions about future events, but we remain open and committed to exploring all possible avenues, and will be looking at alternative ways to continue supporting our community as we navigate these challenges,” the spokesperson said.
