Glass House Country Men’s shed awarded Senior Community Group of the year

THE Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed has been awarded Senior Community Group of the Year at the 2025 Fisher Community Awards, shining a spotlight on the hinterland group’s role in supporting local men and fostering a strong sense of community.
The Sunshine Coast’s spirit of volunteering was on full display on Friday night (Sept 19), with more than 300 locals gathering at Caloundra RSL for the sold-out gala dinner. Now in its eighth year, the Fisher Community Awards received more than 300 nominations across 11 categories, honouring individuals, organisations, and clubs that go above and beyond to make Fisher the best place to learn, earn, and retire.
Sandy Woodside, president of the Men’s Shed, said the award was a proud recognition of the group’s long-standing contribution to the community. “Our club currently has 44 paid-up members, with a few more who come and go due to health reasons,” Mr Woodside said. “Winning this award gives us tremendous pride and joy. It’s been a long time in the making, and our standing within the local community is first class. To be appreciated and presented with this award is truly fantastic.”
Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace MP, congratulated the Men’s Shed and highlighted the importance of groups like it in promoting men’s wellbeing. “Congratulations, lads,” Mr Wallace said. “I enjoy coming down to see the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed. They’re always good for a laugh, and that’s the brilliance of Men’s Sheds – men supporting each other without really ‘supporting each other’. It’s the friendly banter that happens when you put two or more blokes together. That camaraderie can be life-changing for some men, because loneliness is one of our biggest killers.”
Mr Wallace encouraged locals to volunteer, emphasising the reciprocal benefits of giving back. “This night was all about celebrating the people and groups who make the Sunshine Coast such a special place,” he said. “The winners and finalists are salt-of-the-earth people who give their time freely and willingly for our community’s benefit. It’s our privilege to be served by them, and this is one small way we can celebrate their contribution.”
Reflecting on the growth of the event, Mr Wallace noted: “This is the first year we’ve held a gala dinner. Previously, it was a smaller, stand-up event of around 100 people. Selling out in just a couple of days really shows the depth of community spirit here on the Sunshine Coast.”
The evening was not just about awards but also about recognising the thousands of volunteers who dedicate time and energy to improve the lives of others. Mr Wallace said The Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed stood out as a group that provides social connection, camaraderie, and support for men, combating loneliness while enriching the broader community.
