The Miles Government, in partnership with Y Queensland, will build 47 affordable homes for older women at risk of homelessness through the Housing Investment Fund.
The development will include fully accessible one- and two-bedroom self-contained apartments, as well as dedicated community spaces to foster social connection. The homes will provide safe, stable housing for vulnerable community members, with on-site support to help tenants maintain long-term tenancies.
Y Queensland will collaborate with external support agencies, including Q Shelter and the Housing Older Women’s Support Service, to ensure lasting positive change for residents. Construction is set to commence next year as part of the Miles Government’s Homes for Queenslanders plan, which aims to deliver one million new homes.
Premier Steven Miles highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “These homes will primarily help older women in our community who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.”
Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling housing insecurity, while Y Queensland CEO Damien Foley noted that women over 55 are the fastest-growing cohort of homeless people.
Located near existing Y Queensland facilities, the new units will provide residents with additional community support and essential services.
