Millions of trips taken across SEQ on Smart Ticketing system

More than 11 million trips have been taken using South East Queensland’s Smart Ticketing system, as commuters embrace the convenience of contactless payment options on public transport.

Translink’s $371 million Smart Ticketing system allows adult passengers to pay with a credit card, debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch, eliminating the need for a go card on trains and trams.

In a major milestone, all 2600 buses in SEQ, Brisbane City Council’s (BCC) 30 ferries, including CityCats, and six Southern Moreton Bay Island (SMBI) ferries have been fitted with Smart Ticketing devices. Trials on BCC ferries are set to commence in the first half of 2024, followed by staged rollouts across the 13 bus operators and SMBI ferries.

Until trials begin, customers should continue using their go card on SEQ buses and ferries equipped with the new devices. Passengers will be advised when Smart Ticketing payment options become available across the wider network.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Bart Mellish said the uptake of Smart Ticketing has been a resounding success.

“The fact that more than 11 million trips have already been taken using Smart Ticketing demonstrates how convenient and easy this world-class system is for passengers,” Mr Mellish said.
