Minor rash outbreak prompts emergency response in Mapleton

A group of 25 people suffered what authorities described as a “very minor rash” during a gathering at Obi Obi Road, Mapleton, on Tuesday morning (October 22), prompting a rapid but precautionary response from emergency services.

Initial reports suggested up to 29 people were experiencing skin irritation and possible respiratory issues, sparking concern and a call-out to Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). Given the uncertainty of the situation, several QAS crews were dispatched to the site.

However, when paramedics arrived and conducted assessments, it quickly became clear the incident was less serious than initially feared. A QAS spokesperson said, “They don’t have respiratory issues. They’ve got a minor rash.” The symptoms were described as “small red spots, a bit itchy, but that’s it.”

One person initially reported mild breathing difficulties but did not require further treatment. None of the affected individuals opted for transport to hospital, instead choosing to monitor their condition and seek medical attention if needed.

“They all exhibited a very mild rash. No one wanted to be transported to hospital, and they’ve all indicated they’re going to make their own way to seek any medical attention if they wanted,” the spokesperson said.

The incident was reported at 10:57am, and emergency services remained at the scene until all patients were assessed and cleared. The cause of the rash remains undetermined, with QAS unable to confirm whether the group had come into contact with a plant, water source, or other environmental factor that could have triggered the irritation.

Responding to inquiries about the large number of people reportedly affected in one location, QAS said. “It was just a group of people… we were not told about any relationships or reason for the gathering. From our end, in was just 25 people in one spot,” the spokesperson explained.

Emergency responders have since stood down, with no ongoing risk to the wider community. QAS continues to monitor for any further developments related to the minor medical episode at Mapleton.
