MT Beerwah has officially reopened following a vandalism attack during which individuals used power tools to carve ‘Jesus saves lives’ into rock.
The vandalism, in late May this year, forced authorities to close the track, both to repair the rock face and for cultural healing.
Following questions from GC&M News, the Department of Environment and Science said the opening was delayed because “a member of the public has further interfered with the site during the remediation effort, causing complications”.
“Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) are appealing to the public not to interfere with the site and to allow QPWS, the Jinibara and specialist conservators conduct the remediation works,” the statement said.
“QPWS continues to ask the public that when visiting the Glass House Mountains National Park, to please consider respecting the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi People’s request not to climb the culturally sacred Beerwah and Tibrogargan peaks,” the statement said.
A Save our Summit climb will be taking place on August 12 at Mt Beerwah, to celebrate it’s reopening to the public, read more here… https://gcnews.com.au/sos-climb-in-face-of-mt-beerwah-closure/ .
