Multicultural Queensland Awards to open as state celebrates Lunar New Year

As Queenslanders mark the start of Lunar New Year and the arrival of the Year of the Snake, the Crisafulli Government has announced that nominations for the 2025 Multicultural Queensland Awards will open next week.

The awards recognise individuals and organisations working to strengthen Queensland’s social fabric through initiatives that promote inclusion and cultural understanding.

With one in five Queenslanders born overseas, more than 190 languages spoken and 110 religions practised, the state is one of Australia’s most diverse. The annual awards shine a light on those making a difference across health, education, employment and community services.

Multiculturalism Minister Fiona Simpson said the awards were a chance to acknowledge people who build bridges between communities.

“It’s important we recognise champions of social inclusion who help people feel a sense of belonging and live full, meaningful lives in Queensland,” she said.

Simpson encouraged nominations of individuals helping others connect across cultures and driving positive change in diverse communities.

Past recipient Sara Shams, a disability advocate born in Bangladesh, said the awards gave voice to underrepresented groups. “Through the Multicultural Queensland Awards, our voices are amplified, and our stories are shared,” she said.

Registrations open Monday 3 February at www.qld.gov.au/mqa.
