THE Sunshine Coast community is being invited to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of First Nations peoples during NAIDOC Week, with a diverse program of free events and activities running across the region until July 12.
This year’s national theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks five decades of NAIDOC celebrations, recognising the resilience, leadership and enduring contributions of First Nations communities.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said NAIDOC Week was an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to come together in a spirit of respect, learning and recognition.
“NAIDOC Week is a time for everyone to celebrate the stories, strength and achievements of First Nations peoples,” Mayor Natoli said. “It is also an opportunity to recognise the enduring cultures and deep knowledge of the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara peoples, the Traditional Custodians of this region.”
Highlights include free activities at Sunshine Coast Libraries until July 11, featuring botanical eco-printing, dot art and curated book displays, while Caloundra Regional Gallery is hosting LORE and LAND: First Nations Artists in the Art Collection until August 16.
The celebrations conclude with the Undumbi Culture NAIDOC Festival of the Harvest at Baringa Forest Park on July 11, featuring music, dance, storytelling, bush tucker, Indigenous markets, workshops and family activities.
