First, make sure you know your Apple ID or Google account password before you begin.
This is the key that unlocks all your information on the new device. If you are unsure of it, reset it ahead of time rather than on Christmas morning.
Next, keep both devices plugged into power during the transfer.
Moving large amounts of data uses a surprising amount of battery, and there is no need to rush the setup.
Take your time and read each screen so you understand what you are choosing.
Finally, do not erase or switch off your old phone until the new one is fully working.
