Most crashes aren’t caused by “bad drivers” – they happen when good drivers get rushed, distracted, or caught out by someone else’s mistake. Here are three simple techniques you can use every day to reduce your risk on the road.
1) Look further ahead
Instead of staring at the car directly in front, scan 10–15 seconds up the road. You’ll spot brake lights, merging traffic, parked cars pulling out, cyclists, and changing conditions earlier – which gives you time to react smoothly rather than suddenly.
2) Keep a real safety gap (and keep it consistent).
A safe following distance is your best “buffer” when something unexpected happens.
Aim for at least a 3 second gap in good conditions, and increase it in rain, glare, or heavy traffic.
The goal is to avoid harsh braking — because that’s where rear-end crashes often start.
3) Make your intentions obvious.
Accidents often happen when someone else can’t predict what you’re about to do.
Indicate early, brake gently before turning, and position your car clearly in the lane. If you’re changing lanes, do a quick mirror check, shoulder check, then move decisively – no drifting.
A final reminder: if you’re tired, stressed, or distracted, treat that as a warning sign and slow everything down — speed, decisions, and reactions.
Drive safe, and if the unexpected does happen, know you can choose your repairer and get quality repairs done locally. Call us if you ever need us.
