Operation Mistletoe Launched to Ensure Road Safety This Christmas

High-visibility police will be out in force on Sunshine Coast roads and beaches this holiday season to reduce road trauma during the busy summer break and back-to-school period.

Launching today, Operation Mistletoe takes a tactical approach to improve road safety for drivers, riders, and pedestrians. Covert and overt police motorcycles equipped with mobile radars will increase visibility and enforcement.

As of December 13, 287 lives have been lost on Queensland roads this year, 20 more than at this time last year. Thirteen of those fatalities occurred on Sunshine Coast roads, while over 6,000 people have suffered serious injuries or long-term trauma.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Acting Superintendent Chris Toohey said the alarming figures highlight the need for greater enforcement.
“Each life lost is a tragedy,” he said. “With increased traffic during the holidays, we’re increasing police presence, including a surge in motorbike patrols.”

He reminded the community of the “fatal five” causes of crashes: speeding, impairment, distraction, not wearing a seatbelt, and fatigue.
“Most crashes are preventable. Drive to conditions, and if it’s flooded, forget it,” Acting Superintendent Toohey urged.

Local beaches will also see heightened enforcement to address reckless driving and ensure safety.
