SUNSHINE Coast pensioners will receive a higher rates concession under Sunshine Coast Council’s 2026-27 Budget, aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures despite a broader rates increase across the region.
The budget includes a five per cent increase to the Pensioner Concession, taking the annual discount to $343 for a single person on a full pension and $268 for pensioner couples.
Part-pensioners will also receive increased concessions, with single recipients eligible for $171.50 and couples $98 annually.
Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the increases recognised the financial challenges facing many older residents.
“Pensioner concessions have been boosted and support is available for anyone finding it difficult to pay their rates,” she said.
Council will also offer six-month interest-free payment plans for residents experiencing financial hardship.
The budget includes several initiatives aimed at improving accessibility and safety for older residents.
A $5 million Vulnerable Pedestrian Program will fund safer pathways and crossings across the region, making walking more accessible for seniors and people with mobility or vision impairments.
Council has also allocated $18.7m for library services and $6m for park renewal projects, including upgrades to pathways, seating, shade structures and other community facilities used by older residents.
The concessions come as most owner-occupier households face an average rates increase of $221.68 a year, or 9.7 per cent, under the new budget.
