Probus, a senior social club for fun, fellowship and friendship in retirement
October 1 marks the United Nations Day of Older Persons, and across Australia, thousands of older adults will celebrate Probus Month, highlighting “fun and friendship in retirement.”
Probus Clubs offer a wide range of activities including special lunches, morning and afternoon teas, high teas, theatre trips, garden tours, river and harbour cruises, and local picnics. The clubs aim to keep retirees socially connected and engaged, with more than 1,400 clubs nationwide and around 100,000 members. In 2024 alone, 50 new clubs were established, with growth continuing in both suburban and regional areas. Probus will celebrate 50 years in Australia in 2026.
The clubs are non-political and non-fundraising, focusing on social gatherings that encourage friendship and enjoyment at a low cost. Members participate in activities that keep both mind and body active. This year’s theme, “Reinvent Your Retirement,” encourages retirees to explore new experiences and social connections.
Locally, the Glass House Mountains Probus Club will host a special BBQ at Glasshouse Park behind the Bowls Club on Wednesday, October 15, featuring activities, food, and Certificates of Appreciation for selected members. The club meets monthly to enjoy guest speakers, outings, and the company of like-minded retirees. Its motto, “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship,” emphasizes community and companionship in retirement.
