Queensland Rail has welcomed 86 new apprentices and graduates as it expands its workforce to meet growing demand in the state’s rail industry.
The successful recruits, selected from more than 3,000 applicants, will take on roles across South East Queensland, Toowoomba, Maryborough, Emerald, Cairns, Townsville, and Cloncurry. The new intake includes electricians, mechanics, engineers, and other key roles needed to support Queensland’s rapidly evolving transport network.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Bart Mellish said the opportunity to work with one of Queensland’s largest employers would set recruits on a strong career path.
“This is a chance to help shape the future of rail in Queensland,” he said. “With major projects like Cross River Rail and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, these new apprentices and graduates will play a vital role in transforming transport across the state.”
Queensland Rail CEO Kat Stapleton said the organisation was committed to nurturing talent.
“We are proud to provide an industry-leading apprenticeship and graduate program that supports career growth,” she said. “With continued training and development, these recruits will help build a highly skilled workforce that benefits Queensland for years to come.”
Apprentice Sub Station Electrician Lauren Corbett, a mother making a career change, said she was eager to learn new skills.
“I wanted to show my kids that you can do anything,” she said. “Queensland Rail offers constant learning opportunities and great career paths.”
Apprentice Rail Traction Linesperson Lleyton Taylor said he was drawn to the stability and variety the role offers.
“I like that every day is different and that I’m helping keep the network running smoothly,” he said.
Applications for Queensland Rail’s 2025 intake of apprentices and graduates will open soon. Interested candidates can sign up for alerts on the Queensland Rail careers website.
