Queensland’s nation-leading 50-cent fare trial has officially started today, Monday, 5 August, allowing commuters to travel on all Translink public transport services for a flat 50 cents, regardless of distance.
The initiative, which covers buses, trains (excluding Airtrain), trams, on-demand transport, and ferries across the state, is expected to save commuters a combined $150 million over the next six months.
As part of the Miles Government’s broader $11 billion cost-of-living package, the fare reduction builds on $1,000 energy bill rebates for households and a 20 per cent cut to vehicle registration fees.
Airtrain fares have also been halved, with go card and Smart Ticketing users now paying $10.95, while paper ticket customers will pay $11. Weekly Worker Tickets have been reduced to $21.50, and a Book of 20 tickets is now $60.
Premier Steven Miles said the initiative aims to ease cost-of-living pressures and reduce congestion.
“Your regular bus or train might be a little busier from today, but I want to assure Queenslanders that we will be keeping a close eye on our networks at every step,” he said.
Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance using the Translink Journey Planner.
