Regulator Warns Consumers to Avoid Rogue Tradies in South East Queensland

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has issued public warnings about two tradesmen operating in South East Queensland with histories of defrauding consumers.

James Bruce Michael Darren Brown, a stair supplier, installer, and renovator, is under scrutiny after Sunshine Coast and Brisbane residents reported paying substantial deposits for stairs and renovations that were never delivered. This is not Mr Brown’s first offence. He was found guilty of breaching Australian Consumer Law in May 2022 and March 2024, receiving over $110,000 in fines and ordered to pay $61,330 in compensation. Consumers are advised to avoid businesses linked to him, including SMC Stair Supplies Pty Ltd and Unique Group of Companies (AU) Pty Ltd.

The OFT has also warned against Matthew Geoffrey Rixon, also known as Joseph J Sara, who operates Fence Sure and Sunstate Home Improvements. Mr Rixon has a long record of fraud, multiple public warnings, and legal action in Queensland and New South Wales. Despite a Supreme Court order prohibiting his involvement in residential building work, he is offering fencing and renovation services in South East Queensland.

Consumers are urged to verify ABNs, licences, and lodge complaints if affected at www.qld.gov.au/fairtrading. Subcontractors are also warned that Mr Rixon often fails to pay for their work.
