For Ian Deacon, home is more than just a place to unwind – it’s also his ideal workspace.
At 68, Ian is still working full-time as a software developer for a New Zealand-based company, designing safety systems for house-moving trailers.
And he’s doing it all from the comfort of his new home at GemLife Moreton Bay.
“The time difference works in my favour,” he says. “I start at 7am and finish by 2pm, which leaves plenty of time to enjoy everything happening around the resort.”
Ian and his wife Suzanne made the move from Ferny Grove in 2025.
After growing tired of maintaining their garden and pool, they decided it was time for a lifestyle change – and found it in spades at GemLife.
They visited Ian’s brother at GemLife Bribie Island and were impressed.
“So, we started looking closer to home and GemLife Moreton Bay just felt right,” said Suzanne.
The couple were after a community-focused lifestyle with less upkeep and more time to do the things they love. “No more weekends doing chores – that was a big win,” Ian adds.
While Ian’s job keeps him mentally sharp, living at GemLife has brought new social energy to his days.
“I’ve worked remotely for nearly 20 years, and it can be isolating,” he says. “Here, I get more day-to-day social interaction than ever before – it’s a really friendly place.”
His home office is well equipped with fast internet and ducted air-conditioning – and by the weekend, it becomes a playroom for the grandkids.
With construction of the resort’s brand-new waterfront Country Club powering ahead, the Deacons are excited for what’s to come.
“Suzanne’s looking forward to the bowling alley and craft room, and I can’t wait to play a bit of pickleball,” Ian says.
Between working, travelling and welcoming family, the Deacons have found the perfect balance of connection, freedom and fun.
“It’s made our lives easier – and a whole lot more enjoyable.”
