Save soil movement

KENILWORTH resident Enya Gonzales is opening her home to 19-year-old Indian environmental activist Sahil Jha as he embarks on a worldwide journey for a crucial cause.

Sahil, a passionate change-maker, is dedicated to raising awareness about soil degradation—an urgent global crisis threatening food security and biodiversity. He was initially inspired by the international ‘Save Soil’ movement, and at just 16, he took action by cycling an incredible 15,000 kilometers across India in 15 months. During this time, he engaged with over 250 institutions, politicians, and influencers to advocate for policies that promote soil health.

Soil degradation is a growing global issue, leading to severe consequences such as nutritional deficiencies, climate change acceleration, biodiversity loss, and food shortages. Increasing the organic content of soil is a key solution that can improve food production, restore ecosystems, and help mitigate climate change.

Sahil’s new mission will see him cycle 20,000 kilometers across 20 countries, starting in Brisbane in March 2025. Over 15 months, he will travel through cities, towns, and rural communities, speaking at schools, meeting with environmental groups, and rallying global leaders to implement sustainable soil policies.

Enya Gonzales said she is honoured to support Sahil’s journey. “I’m hosting Sahil because I’m so inspired that such a young person would dedicate his life so intensely to raising awareness about this issue,” she said. “From my side, I have also been spreading the message on social media and to friends and family.”
