‘SeaSisters’ 55+ are riding the waves

A GROUP of Sunshine Coast women aged over 55 is proving adventure has no age limit, taking to the waves each week to build confidence, stay active and forge new friendships.

SeaSisters is a growing community of women who meet regularly to bodyboard, with the group recently adopting its new name as it enters the next chapter of its development.

What began as a small gathering of women at Kings Beach has expanded, with SeaSisters now also meeting at Alexandra Headland and welcoming women regardless of their experience in the surf.

Organiser Sarah said the focus was not on competition or ability, but creating an inclusive environment where women could enjoy the ocean together. “We’re not experts or professional surfers,” she said. “We’re just women who love the ocean, want to stay active, try new things and have fun together.”

Some members have bodyboarded for years, while others are taking to the waves for the first time.

There is no pressure to keep up, with members encouraged to develop their skills at their own pace while supporting each other in the water.

The group will take its skills a step further this month with a special coaching session hosted by Sunshine Coast Bodyboarders at Kings Beach on Saturday, September 19, from 8.30am.

The session will give members an opportunity to learn from experienced local bodyboarders, pick up new techniques and build their confidence in the surf.

While a shared love of the ocean initially brings many of the women together, members say the friendships and encouragement have become just as important.

SeaSisters member Tracy said there was something empowering about women continuing to challenge themselves later in life.

“There’s something pretty special about women in their 50s, 60s and beyond deciding that life is still about trying new things,” she said. “Sometimes you just need someone beside you saying, ‘Come on – let’s give it a go!’” The group hopes its continued growth will encourage more women to get into the water, regardless of whether they have previous bodyboarding experience.

For SeaSisters, getting older is no reason to retreat from adventure, with members instead embracing the chance to stay active, connect with others and catch a few waves along the way.
